Featured Piece: American Soil, Island Blood

Born on borrowed land,
but my blood knows saltwater.
Knows the rhythm of goats on a Sunday morning,
steel pan hymns on hot pavement,
and Mama saying, “Freedom is knowing who you are
even when they try to rename you.”

PTSD ain’t just war wounds.
It’s growing up hearing gunshots
and not knowing if it’s celebration or sorrow.
It’s watching boys with soft eyes turn stone-cold
just to survive the block.

I served this country with honor—
ten years, boots laced in purpose.
But trauma followed me back.
Didn’t salute, didn’t knock.
Just laid in my bed like it belonged there.
And maybe it did.
